Mehdi Hassan

Legendary artist and Shahensha-e-Ghazal Mehdi Hassan expired at the age of 84 after a long period of sickness on Wednesday. He was under treatment in a private hospital in Karachi. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital after his condition deteriorated couple of days ago. He was suffering from multiple health problems including numerous lung, chest and urinary tract ailments. Mehdi Hassan was born into a traditional family of instrumentalists at Luna village, Rajhasthan, in 1927. His family traveled to Pakistan after 1947 partition. Mehdi Hassan was one of most followed classical singer in the subcontinent. He started performing at the age of 8 and his singing career remained in full swing until late 1980’s after which he cut back on his concerts due to illness. Mehdi Hassan, undoubtedly one of the most accomplished and successful ghazal singers of his era was taught classical music by his father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan. Both of them were well respected classical musicians. Mehdi Hassan tried diverse styles of music and ruled the music component of Pakistan film industry for decades. There was a time when no film was considered complete without including the voice of Shahensha-Ghazal Ustad Mehdi Hassan. He was appointed as Pakistan’s cultural ambassador and toured India several times. Besides Pakistan he performed in number of other countries as well. Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and others has expressed grief and sorrow over the said demise of legendary singer Mehdi Hassan.
